The Army is never a fixed roster. In Season 1, Aku's henchmen are often individual madmen, cursed warriors, or grotesque creatures he recruits in the future and then dispatches to past centuries to sabotage Jack's quest. The Dark Army—his core infantry of dark, vaguely humanoid soldiers—appears as a massed force when Aku needs to overwhelm a location or hold a ground position. These soldiers are less characters than an expression of Aku's power: faceless, numerous, and expendable.

As the series progresses, the Army gains structure. By Season 4, Aku commands a more organized war machine, with distinct units, a fortified base of operations in the future, and henchmen who carry out multi-stage plans.
